A dedication is a short, personal message in which you dedicate your book to someone who has played a meaningful role in your life or writing journey. It is an opportunity to recognize a person, group, or even an idea that inspired or supported you.

What Does a Dedication Look Like?

A dedication is usually just one or two sentences. It typically appears on its own page in the front matter, after the copyright page and before the table of contents or introduction. The page is often kept simple, with the dedication positioned in the centre or slightly above the centre, surrounded by plenty of white space.

For example:

To my parents, who taught me to believe in the power of curiosity.

Or:

For everyone who has ever dared to start again.

Who Can You Dedicate Your Book To?

You can dedicate your book to anyone or anything that holds personal significance. This might be a partner, child, parent, friend, mentor, teacher, or someone who inspired your work. You might also dedicate it to a group of people, a community, or a cause connected to your subject.

A dedication does not have to explain the full story behind your choice. A few sincere words are often enough.

Why Include a Dedication?

A dedication is not essential, but it adds a personal touch to your book. It allows you to acknowledge someone important to you and gives readers a small glimpse into the personal meaning behind your work.

Keep it genuine and concise. Unlike acknowledgements, which provide space to thank several people for their support and contributions, a dedication is usually reserved for one person, a small group, or a meaningful cause. It is entirely optional, so include one only if it feels right for your book.
