Some stories sound so unlikely that people assume they must be made up. This is one of them.
Years ago, while working in Germany, I became friends with a colleague whom I’ll call Robert. It isn’t his real name, but some details are better left changed. We clicked almost immediately. We laughed at the same things, enjoyed spending time together, and before long we were seeing each other outside of work more often than many actual couples.
At the beginning, I had no idea that Robert was gay. It wasn’t something he talked about openly, and it wasn’t something I thought to ask. To me, he was simply a good friend. Over time, as our friendship grew closer, he eventually trusted me enough to tell me. The conversation didn’t change anything between us. If anything, it brought us closer.
